This is the roleplay log archive of a fictional character on PernMUSH, a game based on the Dragons of Pern series copyright by Anne McCaffery.
Ywain's history:
Ywain - African descent, long-haired, decently-build Jack of All Trades, Master of None - Highly intelligent, not entirely ambitious.
Born: Bitra - outer cothold. Decided early on that farming was not the life he wished to pursue. Fortunately, this conicided with his quick wit (the Lord said 'smart mouth') getting him in enough trouble that it was advisable to send him away; at 15 Ywain procured the local Harper's recommendation (which may have been given partially in the spirit of self-preservation), for Ywain to be sent to Harper Hall.
There, he enjoyed reading, hated copying, loved woodcraft, hated diplomacy (though he was capable of this), would rather have had his left big toe cut off than work as an archivist or legalist, was not much of a composer, though he could limp along as a vocalist (nice sandy-basso voice (think Leonard Cohen), once it fully turned adult). He really loved dance and drumming, eventually specializing in the latter, up to and including making drums -- experimenting with different shapes, different materials, different skins for different tones. Drumming became his passion, dance second.
Eventually -- and recently, walking the tables -- and this is not a man who excelled at anything in which he wasn't totally interested -- didn't study much, but rather passed on raw talent and then just barely -- except for his passions: Drumming, and to some extent, dancing. He's not expected to ever make master; without the dedication that comes from hard work, Ywain may exist forever as a Journeyman. But, he seems quite happy with his lot in life and the irksome behaviors that had him all but banned from Bitra as a child have at least been softened by a few genuine abilities and sometimes overshadowed by raw talent.
Ysolt
Born: Bitra - outer cothold. Older brother Ywain left, due to his constantly getting into trouble with both the mini-Lord Holder’s son after HE decided early on that farming was not the life he wished to pursue.
Younger sister Ysolt realized that her fate was to be marriage to one of several young lads who, while decent enough, were not acceptable, nor offered her the sort of life she also craved. Given no recommendation by the Harper (whose health gave out soon after Ywain left), given no leave by her Holder, and without the particular support of her parents who are not bad people, but who simply could not come to terms with their willfull children’s preferences, fourteen-turn-old Ysolt’s disappearance coincided with the departure of a caravan of Traders, set to Bitra.
Of the ensuing six turns, a few letters returned to Ysolt’s parents cothold, for Ysolt was an excellent reader and writer, but these letters mostly omitted the ‘education’ that both Bitra proper and traveling caravans could provide for a handsome and exotic-looking young woman. Ysolt’s brief affairs with one or another fellow afforded her adequate protection against the worst of the predators, but not exactly what she wanted from life. To make a living, she became able at turning her hand to a number of minor talents – dancing, fiddleplaying, reading the futures of gullible sorts, riding, cooking, woodscraft, and she’s a fair artist. With a somewhat adventurous and roving outlook on life, probably better suited for a man than a skirt-wearing, slow-talking female, Ysolt has traveled for turns, determined to experience the most of life before she eventually drifts somewhere that will finally catch her, contain her.
